US Solar Module Supplier Mission Solar has announced that through its parent company, OCI Holdings, $ 265 million will invest to add a 2 GW production facility for solar cells to his campus in San Antonio, Texas.

Mission is planning to produce and be planning to secure a total production capacity of 2 GW by the first quarter of 2026 to be planned to ultimately, “said a statement by OCI Holdings.

The company said that the solar cells in its own country will produce using polysilicon from the Malaysian OCI Terrasus, a subsidiary of OCI holdings that uses hydropower to provide its polysilicon production activities with power.

The American solar industry is working on setting up an independent supply chain of production, but the production of solar cells is limited. Suniva operates a 1 GW cell production facility in Georgia, while Es Foundry recently launched one 1 GW plant In South Carolina. In the meantime, the domestic solar module assembly capacity will grow by 190%, from 14.5 GW at the end of 2023 to 52.3 GW by 2025, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

“While our nation is experiencing a revival of American production, we are expanding our capacities to deliver completely domestic solar solutions,” said Sam Martens, president of Mission Solar Energy. “Applying solar cell production to our facility underlines our dedication to American production, job creation and a transparent, ethical supply chain.”

Mission Solar completed an extension of 200,000 square feet facility in May 2024 from its San Antonio factory, creating space to accommodate a production facility of cell and module. The company expects the Cell FAB to create 500 production paths in the long term.

The industry based in the US is expected to benefit from the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC) under the Inflation Reduction Act, which offers a tax credit of $ 0.04 per Watt. In addition, solar projects that meet a threshold of the domestic content of the US is eligible for an additional investment tax credit of 10% (ITC).

OCI Holdings said that the Malaysia-made polysilicon of OCI Terrasus has a fully traceable supply chain that meets the American customs rules and the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA).
