A 78 kW floating PV installation powered the Paris Olympic Village. It was transported 900 meters along the River Seine to supply renewable electricity to the athletes’ village.

The world’s largest mobile floating PV installation was used on the River Seine for the Paris Olympic Games. The 78 kW solar installation, rented by EDF ENR, supplied green electricity to the central hub of the athletes’ village.

The project, covering 470 square meters, operated independently without connection to the electricity grid, adapting its output to the needs of the site in real time. It was set up and fully operational in less than 24 hours by unfolding and connecting pre-wired solar panels in a shipping container.

Franck Chauveau, director of major project development for EDF in Île-de-France, said pv magazine France that it was the first mobile PV installation to be used in such a way on a body of water.

The innovative PV structure offers an alternative to generators to provide electricity at events such as the Olympic Games, fairs and festivals, as well as in remote locations not connected to the public electricity grid. Voies Navigables de France (VNF), which manages most of France’s inland waterways, has shown particular interest in using them for construction sites along riverbanks.
