Nedo outlines R&D concepts to expand the acceptance of solar energy in Japan -PV Magazine International

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan has launched a project 2025-29 with 24 themes to promote the development of solar cells of the next generation, location-specific systems, grid stability and recycling in line with the aim of carbon neutrality.

Nedo, the state-running energy and industrial technology development agency, has selected 24 themes under its new “Technology Development project for expanding the acceptance of solar energy”, including 20 for research and development and four for research studies.

The initiative is based on Nedo’s Solar Power Development Strategy 2025, which focuses on technical and social challenges after large -scale implementation. It will focus on the next generation of solar cells, location-specific solar systems, the long-term stability of solar generation and recycling technologies for PV modules.

The 7th strategic energy plan of Japan, approved in February, sets a goal for renewable energy sources to offer 40% to 50% of the stream mix in fiscal 2040, with solar energy contributing to 23% to 29%. Nedo’s strategy responds by setting five areas of attention: new cell technologies, extensive system acceptance, diversification of applications, stable generation and resource recycling.

The 24 themes cover multiple fronts. Three address solar cells beyond crystalline silicon, where perovskiet is combined with silicon or compound devices for higher efficiency and sustainability. Five focus on solar systems that are suitable for varied locations, including cheap, lightweight and flame-resistant modules, as well as installation and maintenance methods. Two projects will develop guidelines for reliable implementation and highly accurate forecast of irradiation. Two target recycling systems for perovskiet modules.

Eight themes are aimed at promoting evaluation technologies and exploring solar technologies outside the current ‘next generation’ category. Four research studies will follow trends in solar technology, industry and markets; international cooperation programs; recycling practices; And standardization of perovskiet cells.

The project runs from Fiscal 2025 to 2029. Nedo said that it aims to build sustainable solar systems to support the purpose of the Japanese goal of CO2 neutrality by 2050.

In March 2025, Nedo launched its solar strategy to scale PV through new cell technology, various systems, stability and recycling. And in April the Tax 2025 financing for R&D opened on very efficient solar cells, location-specific systems, recycling and long-term stability.
