New Swiss research shows that PV-driven houses can increase power consumption by a maximum of 11% compared to non-Solar households. This increase is linked to the acceptance of electric vehicles or other devices with a high use, the author of the study notes is not inherently negative or waste.

New research from the University of Bern in Switzerland has shown that the installation of a PV system of a residential roof could increase the power consumption of a household by a maximum of 11%.

The researcher also discovered that the rebound effect is mainly powered by the high capacity of the residential PV systems that are considered in the study, the average of which is approximately 8 kW. “These adopters react stronger to large PV yields on solar energy,” he said, noticed that households who resort to storage tend to show relatively lower rebound effects.

“Solar -Rebound effects are usually observed negatively and are often mentioned as arguments against subsidy programs,” he concluded. “However, my findings suggest that parts of the solar rebound effects can arise from households that further excite their heating and transport modes.”

“At the moment there are no plans to further extend to different segments, because the institutional setting is slightly more complex with commercial and industrial solar owners in Switzerland,” Biegler added. “However, I know few studies that do similar studies into industrial adopters in Germany and Uruguay.”

In February, researchers from Australia and Vietnam published the results of a research work on the short and long-term dynamics of the rebound effect. This article showed that residential solar installations can increase the total electricity demand of a household by around 16.3% compared to non-set households
