Nigeria’s State Owning Rural Electrification Agency (REA) works together with the Nigeria Infrastructure Corporation (Infracorp) and the Dutch solar manufacturer Solarge BV to create a special vehicle that will set up and operate a 1 GW solar panel production facility in Nigeria.
The three parties have set up Solarge Nigeria Limited via a deal that was signed on Wednesday at the Infracorp office in Abuja. According to local reports, Solarge BV will have a 49% interest in Solarge Nigeria, with Infracorp and REA being 26% and 25% control.
A statement released by REA says that the public-private partnership will use the investment mobilization capacity of Infracorp, REA policy leadership in rural electrification and public sector solarization and Solarge BV’s technology and production expertise to locate high-quality solar PV production in Nigeria.
The 1 GW solar panel factory will focus on 50% local content within the first three years.
According to the conditions of the Agreement, REA has committed itself to obtain at least 200 MW of solar modules per year in five years from Solarge Nigeria Ltd, who goes to his public electrification programs.
“Because of this joint venture, we not only create access to clean energy, but building the local capacity to produce it,” noted Abba Abubakar Aliyu, director and CEO of REA.
“We are pleased to bring our technology and experience to this historical initiative,” added Solarge BV CEO Joost Brinkman. “Solarge Nigeria Ltd will set a new benchmark for solar production in Africa, built by Nigerians, for Nigerians.”
In March, Rea signed an agreement with the renewable energy sources based in Lagos Oando Clean Energy for a 1.2 GW solar assembly factory. Earlier this year, the Nigerian government proposed a ban on the import of solar panels to stimulate local production.
