Discover clean energy has begun construction on Trail Road BESS in Ottawa, also home to the new Canadian base, where the team moved on June 9.
Trail Road BESS is a storage location for 150 MW / 600 MWh lithium iron phosphate batteries and is also a joint venture with Algonquins from the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation. The Scout team expects the project to come online sometime in 2027, when it will provide the Canadian capital with increased capacity and network reliability.
Michael Rucker, founder and CEO of Scout, says in addition to energy, the project will bring major benefits to the greater Ottawa community, including funding for local organizations and construction jobs.
“I couldn’t be happier or prouder to see the growth of our team here in Canada,” he says. “Scout is hitting the ground running in the Ontario and Canadian markets, launching a number of substantial projects and has an experienced team. This new office will give them the space to pursue projects locally and across the country.”
The move will locate Scout Clean Energy’s operations north of the U.S. border, allowing the Boulder, Colorado-based company to have a presence further east.
Expanding the pipeline
Scout has built more than 1 GW of energy assets that it currently owns and operates, the company says, and has more than 20 GW of solar, wind and storage projects in development. About 2.6 GW of that portfolio, spread across North America, is already in the late stages of development, officials added.
At 150 MW, the Trail Road BESS project is just a small part of that portfolio, but representatives say the battery system will have an outsized impact on Scout’s broader mission.
“Our new home here in Ottawa will serve as a central hub for Canadian development,” said Ken Little, VP of Canadian development for Scout Clean Energy. “From here, we will build the clean energy solutions and electricity infrastructure that our city, our province and our country need now and in the future.”
Stephen Lecce, Ont Minister of Energy and Miningsays the project is a huge step forward for the province’s energy infrastructure. Trail Road BESS will not only stimulate growth but also create jobs for Ottawan families, he adds.
“This 150 MW battery storage project will strengthen the network’s reliability and help meet the rapidly increasing demand for electricity across the region,” Lecce said. “Increasing reliability while lowering energy costs for families is a top priority of our government. That’s why we’ve lowered the gas tax by 10 cents and launched Canada’s largest energy savings program – putting money back in Ontario’s pockets as Ontarians invest in energy efficiency.”
