UK-based Caldera has developed a new heat storage technology that it says can convert on-site solar energy into heat on demand, replacing conventional gas boilers. The system uses a composite of recycled aluminum and volcanic rock to store heat up to 500 C and produce steam.

British startup Caldera has developed a modular heat storage technology based on an earth-abundant aluminum-rock composite.

The new storage technology, called Megacell, is described as an ideal solution to decarbonize industrial processes and store on-site photovoltaic energy. The system’s stone-aluminium core is claimed to have the same thermal storage capacity as comparable stone, sand or concrete-based storage technologies.

The system is a vacuum-insulated cell that can reportedly store heat up to 500 C and produce hot water or steam at temperatures up to 210 C. It consists of blocks made from a proprietary composite of recycled aluminum and volcanic rock enclosed in a vacuum-insulated chamber.
