Today at the CPUC: Strategic steps in building a low-carbon economy

On May 14, 2024, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will host the second session of the Virtual Building Decarbonization Technical Working Group, marking a pivotal moment in California’s march toward a sustainable future. This virtual-only event is part of the broader Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) strategy, designed to drive innovative clean energy solutions across the state.

This workshop, facilitated by the Accelerate Group, aims to refine and finalize the draft strategic objectives for the Building Decarbonization goal of the EPIC program. These goals are critical in directing investments toward technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings – a key component in achieving California’s ambitious 2045 climate goals.

Detailed agenda insights: The day is structured to maximize stakeholder engagement, starting with an overview of the draft strategic objectives, followed by a series of stakeholder questions and answers, and culminating in a focused session where participants can propose refinements. This format ensures that the proposed measures are robust, equitable and comprehensive, addressing both current and emerging strategies to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the construction sector.

Why it matters: The EPIC program, which is significantly funded by California utility customers and administered by the California Energy Commission along with major utilities like PG and E, SCE and SDG&E, plays a critical role in shifting the boundaries in the field of energy innovation. By setting clear, actionable goals, the CPUC ensures these innovations lead to tangible benefits for all Californians – improving the reliability, affordability and sustainability of energy systems.

The outcomes of this workshop are expected to significantly influence the trajectory of California’s energy policy, especially as they relate to building decarbonization – a sector with substantial impacts on the state’s overall emissions.

As the CPUC continues to guide the state in its clean energy transition, the Building Decarbonization Technical Working Group’s efforts to refine and implement strategic objectives underscore a committed approach to simultaneously achieving environmental, economic and social equity goals accomplish. Stakeholders and the public are encouraged to participate in this process, shaping the future of California’s energy landscape.

For more insights and to join the upcoming discussions, stakeholders are encouraged to register for the webinar and help shape California’s clean energy future.

Bradley Bartz, founder of ABC Solar Incorporated, is a notable advocate within the CPUC, bringing daily insights from numerous cases to the community of solar advocates. Today at the CPUC is a special series featuring the latest updates and in-depth analysis of the CPUC’s actions, tailored to inform and engage solar enthusiasts and professionals.
