SunPower is changing the 470W REC panel to the name of its own panel for the US residential market

Solar power has collaborated with REC Group to produce a solar panel for the US residential market.

TJ Rodgers unveils the SunPower/REC solar panel.

The all-black solar panel peaks at 470 W and weighs 20 kg. It’s a rebranding of REC’s Alpha Pure-RX 470-W panel.

The joint development agreement between SunPower and REC aims to develop, engineer and commercialize high-wattage frameless double-sided solar panels for the residential and light commercial solar markets. The announced panel is not two-sided, but SunPower plans to change that soon.

Despite the fact that the original SunPower went bankrupt, current SunPower chairman and CEO TJ Rodgers is leaning on the former company’s advanced technology roots.

“SunPower has a long history of innovation in solar cell and panel technology since its founding in 1985. By the time of the SPWR Initial Public Offer in 2005, SunPower had already developed the most technologically advanced solar panels in the industry and produced them on fully automated lines,” said Rodgers. “We can now add to that record through our partnership with REC, the current volume leader in the U.S. residential solar industry, known for its sustainability, high quality standards and innovation.”
