Swiss energy company CKW says its new tariff, which calculates prices based on kilowatts, rather than just kilowatt hours, will encourage more targeted use of solar energy during the day.

CKW, a subsidiary of Switzerlandestablished energy company Axpowill introduce a new type of electricity tariff in 2025.

The tariff offers incentives to customers to spread their electricity consumption over the day as much as possible to avoid power peaks in the grid.

Axpo said in a statement on its website that high and low electricity prices for day and night consumption no longer apply. It claimed that by By implementing this change, CKW will encourage a more targeted use of solar energy during the day.

CKW now calculates the demand for the electricity grid based on the maximum power consumed, measured in kilowatts, instead of solely on the basis of kilowatt hours consumed. The company said this approach only works because it has replaced all conventional electricity meters with digital smart meters, becoming the first major utility in Switzerland to do so.

CKW said the new rate lays the foundation for further innovation in the future. In the medium term, it plans to introduce different electricity tariffs for summer and winter.

“During the day in summer, Switzerland will increasingly benefit from electricity surpluses thanks to the large-scale expansion of photovoltaic systems,” the company said. “As a result, prices will fall in the summer and rise in the winter.”

Switzerland’s cumulative solar capacity has been reached 6.8 GW end of April 2024.
