China has completed the most important construction work for the world’s largest Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) energy storage project. The project, supported by China Huaneng Group, has a 200 MW/1 GWH VRFB system combined with a 1 GW solar farm.

With a total investment of CNY 3.8 billion ($ 520 million), the project comprises 1,870 hectare in the county of Jimusar, Xinjiang. Once operational, it is expected that it will generate 1.72 TWH of electricity annually, while according to the developer, more than 1.6 million tonnes per year will be reduced by more than 1.6 million tonnes per year.

The system offers continuous discharge for five hours and is designed to reduce the intermittence of renewable generation by acting both a buffer and a stabilizer for the local grid. This role is mainly of crucial importance in Xinjiang, a region rich in solar and wind sources, but challenged by curtailment and bottlenecks of transmission.
