Torus announced the launch of Torus Community, a distributed energy management feature designed to significantly improve grid stability. The rollout of Community comes after more than a year of successful contributions to grid resiliency from Torus customers involved in Rocky Mountain Power’s (RMP) Virtual Power Plant program.

Torus Community uses the company’s full-stack microgrid technology: an advanced system that integrates the production, storage and management of energy at or near the point of use. Available to both residential and commercial users in Utah, this feature transforms buildings into miniature power plants that can support the electrical grid during critical periods.

“With Torus Community, we are tackling the challenge of distributed energy head-on,” said Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and co-founder of Torus. “This year alone, we successfully responded to 89 demand response events with 99.99% uptime, far exceeding expectations for a reliable, scalable and secure infrastructure.”

Key features and benefits of Torus Community include:

  • Real-time insight into how energy consumption contributes to the health of the electric grid.
  • Significant reduction in energy costs and CO2 emissions for users.
  • Supporting corporate sustainability goals.
  • Education on the role of each participant in creating a resilient energy ecosystem.

The launch of Torus Community marks a significant transition in the company’s capabilities.

“We have moved from managing kilowatts to overseeing large-scale megawatts of energy storage and management,” Walkingshaw said. “This shift highlights the true potential of communities in supporting larger and larger portions of the electric grid over time.”
