The Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy of Tunisia, Fatima al-Thabat Shibb, has approved four solar projects with a combined capacity of 500 MW.

The QAIR International, based in France, will build a 100 MW facility in the Kasr region of the Province Geata and a 200 MW project in the Al-Khabna region of Sidi Bouzid Governorate. The French developer Voltalia will build a 100 MW Zonneboerderij in the province of Gabès. A consortium of Norwegian Scatec and the Japanese Aeolus, a unit of Toyota Tsusho, will develop a 100 MW PV factory near Mazouna in Sidi Bouzid -Gouvernement.

“These projects are expected to come into effect from 2027 and will be able to produce around 1,100 GWh per year, equal to 5% of national electricity production and an economy of approximately 250 thousand tons of natural gas, worth around $ 125 million per year,” the ministry said in a statement.

The projects were selected under a tender of 1.7 GW renewable energy. The ministry said that the lowest rate was $ 0.03183/kWh.

Tunisia promotes the solar scale on solar energy through a series of tenders, including the latest purchasing round launched in January 2023. It completed a 500 MW of solar tendency earlier in December 2019.

In October 2024, Tunisia launched a new tender for 200 MW large-scale solar sun, with submissions on January 15, 2025.
