Ukrainian city switches on Solar – Arrays for local water tools – PV Magazine International

Solar systems with a combined capacity of 340 kW are engaged in three water supply and washbasin facilites in the West -Ukrainian city of Chortkiv, designed to offer residents a continuous water supply.

Solar energy plants are installed in three water supply and waste water facilities in the city of Chortkiv, located in the Ternopiloblast of West -Ekraine.

The factories have been developed through a project implemented by the international financial institution based in Helsinki Nefco-De Nordic Green Bank, which has been working with Chortkiv since 2018 to improve the energy efficiency of its public buildings.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, the area has seen systematic attacks on energy infrastructure, leading to acute electricity shortages that influence municipal services such as water supply, healthcare and education.

As a result, NEFCO has developed a project to install three solar energy plants, two at pumping stations and one and one in the treatment facilities that belong to the local utility, to meet around 20% of the electricity needs of the facilities. With a combined capacity of 340 kW, the solar systems were designed to ensure that inhabitants of Chortkiv have a continuous water supply.

There are also plans for an active consumer rate that must be applied, so that the water company can transfer surplus electricity to the national network.

Jyrki Rautamäki, senior consultant at Nefco, said that solar energy turns out to be a simple and effective solution when extra energy capacity is needed.

“Solar energy plants are economic, to be built quickly and much safer than fuel generators,” said Rautamäki. “They make no noise, require less maintenance and offer more reliable effects, in contrast to mechanical systems that are sensitive to demolition.”

The project was made possible with € 460,000 ($538.106) In subsidy finance of the Eastern European Partnership for Energy Efficiency and Environment (E5P), in addition to technical assistance worth € 54,960 supplied by Sweden and € 33,846 in co-financing of the city of Chortkiv.

Mayor of Chortkiv VolodyMyr Shmatko noted that the project gives hope that the long -term reconstruction of Ukraine will be aimed at recovering from what has been destroyed and transform the country to A more sustainable, energy-independent, environmentally friendly condition. “This is also an example for other cities about building modern infrastructure with the emphasis on green transition and energy efficiency,” the mayor added.

Last month, the eastern Ukrainian village of Donets enabled A solar panel of 30.4 kW supported by a 24 kWh storage system for battery energy to support the water use of the local municipality. Since then, another ZonNePlus storage system has been inaugurated In the Slobozhanske Hospital in northeastern Ukraine.

Ukraine has been deployed 500 MW From solar energy over the first half of 2025, according to preliminary figures from the country’s solar association.
