Vattenfall says it will connect a 7.6 MW solar power plant to a 17 MW wind farm in Germany, allowing both to operate via a single grid connection point.

Barrel trap plans to build a 25 MW hybrid power plant in the southern Eifel region of Germany.

The “Hommerdingen-Biesdorf” project will include four wind turbines with a combined capacity of 17 MW and a solar power plant with approximately 12,000 PV modules totaling 7.6 MW. The wind farm will be built in the municipality of Hommerdingen, while the solar panels will be installed in Biesdorf, near the Luxembourg border.

The two facilities will share a single grid connection, managed by Westnetz. The PV system is not connected separately, but integrated into the existing infrastructure of the wind farm.

“Technically, the solar farm is treated almost like an additional wind turbine, which means that only one grid connection is needed for the entire plant,” Vattenfall said, adding that Westnetz has approved the concept.

Philipp Heucke, head of onshore wind development at Vattenfall in Germany, says the complementary generation profiles of wind and solar can reduce pressure on the distribution grid, compared to either technology working alone. He added that the combined setup will improve network utilization and reduce connection costs compared to standalone exchanges.

Vattenfall has been applying the concept of a joint grid connection in the Netherlands for several years. This is the first time it is implementing the hybrid model in Germany.
