The US-based provider of PV systems for infrastructure and industrial equipment without grid access has launched a battery status monitoring software module for its flagship Core Solar Power Systems product line.

May 3, 2024 Valerie Thompson

Voltaic Systems, a US-based developer of solar PV systems for remote industrial and infrastructure equipment, has added monitoring software to track the health of the batteries in its Core Solar Power System product line.

The Core Solar Power products, which feature a PV panel, an integrated waterproof lithium battery and a mounting system, are sold as an alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries to power infrastructure equipment such as mobile routers, networking devices, air quality monitors, outdoor security cameras, irrigation systems, communication gateways and remote lighting.

The new monitoring software provides information about the battery, temperature, charging status, power generated by solar panels and power consumed by the device.

“Given the value of the data and the remote nature of these types of industrial Internet-of-Things applications, we developed a battery health monitoring system to help customers understand and make decisions about their deployments,” said Jeff Crystal , Chief Operating Officer of Voltaic Systems. , told pv magazine.

The monitoring system provides status snapshots over the cellular network, as well as time series data (see image below), which can be used to warn of potential outages and provide possible corrective steps. “In one case, a customer adjusted their energy usage during a particularly rainy week to maintain uptime. It works for both individual systems and for managing groups of remote devices,” said Crystal.

In addition to the battery and the PV panel, the Core Solar Power System contains an integrated MPPT charge controller (Maximum Power Point Tracking). The panel sizes range from 25 W to 200 W and the matching batteries range from 18 Ah (5 kg) to 100 Ah (33 kg). Dimensions range from 307mm x 507mm x 30mm to 586mm x 980mm x 30mm.
