Zanzibar issues tender for 18 MW of solar energy – SPE

Zanzibar’s state-owned company is holding a tender for the development of an 18 MW solar project at the southern end of the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. The application deadline is January 31, 2025.

Zanzibar Electricity Corp. (ZECO) has launched a tender for the design, supply and installation of a solar power plant with a capacity of at least 18 MW.

It will be located in Makunduchi, one of the southernmost cities on the islands of Zanzibar, an autonomous region of Tanzania.

According to the tender detailsThe chosen developer will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant for three years and will be required to provide training to ZECO staff prior to the handover.

The revolutionary government of Zanzibar received World Bank funding through the United Republic of Tanzania for the cost of the project.

Complete bidding documents can be purchased for $250. A pre-bid meeting and site visit will take place on January 13, 2025, which is mandatory to participate in the bidding process. Applications must be received by mail no later than January 31, 2025.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Tanzania had 16 MW of cumulative installed solar capacity at the end of 2023.
