It took eight years of field measurements before researchers at RWTH Aachen University in Germany were able to estimate the usable capacity of home battery energy storage systems and develop a data set spanning 106 system years and 14 billion data points. Their key finding was that home battery systems lose on average around two to three percentage points of usable capacity per year, which means good news for the industry as most of the market’s guarantees can be met through the implementation of capacity reserves.

Although the residential battery energy storage market has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, the development of standardized methods for quantifying capacity fade during field operations is lagging behind.

With countries like Germany seeing more than 70% of solar-plus-battery storage by 2023, the recently passed EU battery regulation calls for the development of a reliable and transparent health status (SOH) for battery storage, according to BloombergNEF data. estimates for the purpose of “evaluating the residual value of the battery, facilitating the preparation for reuse, the preparation for repurposing, repurposing or remanufacturing of the battery or to make the battery available to independent aggregators,” such as virtual power plants.
