Ireland could host Europe’s first large-scale iron-air project south-west of the town of Buncrana in Donegal County. FuturEnergy Ireland’s proposed 10 MW facility will be able to store 1 GWh of energy.

The joint venture of the Irish state forestry company Coillte and the utility company ESB has submitted an application planning application earlier this week for its first battery storage project, Ballynahone Energy Storage, to Donegal County Council.

The proposed development is designed to utilize iron-air battery technology from US-based Form Energy, which is capable of discharging energy at full power for up to 100 hours when fully charged.
