Vattenfall enters large-scale battery storage – SPE

The utility announced plans to invest extensively in large-scale battery operations in response to growing demand for flexibility, adding 500 MW of battery storage annually.

As renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power continue to dominate the landscape, the need for flexibility in the electricity grid has never been greater. Meet Vattenfall, ready to make its mark in the energy storage world.

“We expect a significant increase in battery storage capacity, especially for short-term daily flexibility needs. System flexibility is crucial for stabilizing networks and limiting price spikes in the market,” said Daniel Drexlin-Runde, via translation, who has played a key role in developing Vattenfall’s flexible storage and system marketing.

While there are challenges for market participants, the current landscape also offers many opportunities.
