An increase in the number of battery storage installations is evident from installer data from the British accreditation body MCS. While 2024 is comfortably the best year on record, Alex Hughes, head of MCS Scheme, tells ESS News she would like to see even more solar installers gain storage accreditation.

It has been a record year for accredited battery storage facilities in Britain. September 2024 was the best month ever according to data collected by the UK certification body MCS, with 1,193 registered certified installations.

Certification is not required to install battery storage alongside PV, and MCS data does not include all installations, but growth among certified installers has increased dramatically. In 2023, the program recorded just 4,965 accredited battery installations for the year, compared to 13,263 years to date as of the end of September 2024.

Alex Hughes, head of scheme at MCS, said ESS news that battery storage is “the fastest growing technology in the plan.”

More than 5,000 UK contractors currently hold MCS certification, with 77% certified for solar, 58% for heat pumps and 34% for battery storage. MCS is a voluntary certification scheme, but using an MCS certified installer is the only way households can guarantee access to the Smart Export Guarantee export tariff, the successor to the UK government’s Feed-in Tariff.
