Trina Solar has achieved an energy conversion efficiency of 26.58% for its large-area industrial TOPCon solar cell. The German Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH CalTeC) independently verified the result, the Chinese PV module manufacturer said.

“This is the first time that the efficiency of the n-type TOPCon cell has exceeded 26%, and the speed of this progress is remarkable,” said Gao Jifan, CEO of Trina Solar. “Trina Solar will continue to intensify its R&D efforts in TOPCon cells and modules, further strengthening its overall competitiveness. At the same time, we will strengthen intellectual property protection to ensure these cutting-edge technologies remain firmly in our hands.”

Zhang Yingbin, head of Trina Solar’s global product strategy, recently said this in an interview with pv magazine that the company aims to achieve an efficiency of more than 26% in TOPCon cells by 2027.

Trina Solar recently achieved a new efficiency milestone of 26.58% for its n-type monocrystalline silicon TOPCon cells, following a record 25.9% in October.

The advancement comes from refining 210mm x 182mm phosphorus-doped n-type silicon wafers and using proprietary quantum tunneling passivated contact technology.

Trina Solar said it has optimized recombination current density, optical trapping and ultra-fine line printing to improve performance.

In the past, it has set records with 24.58% efficient i-TOPCon cells in 2019, a 25.5% efficient 210mm cell in 2022, verified by the China National Institute of Metrology, and a record output module of 740.6 W, certified by TÜV SÜD, April 2024.
