Similar to last year, battery energy storage systems (BESS) made up almost all of the new build capacity selected during recent Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auctions in Belgium. Simon De Clercq, senior research associate at Aurora Energy Research, tells ESS News that there is even more room for BESS players to participate in the tender exercises.

The Belgian storage fleet is growing rapidly, not least thanks to the ability to secure contracted revenues through the CRM auctions.

On the last day of October, grid operator Elia published the results of this year’s CRM auctions, which showed that a total of 450 MW of BESS contracts had been won. For the first time, two auctions were held simultaneously, namely the last auction (Y-1) for the delivery year 2025-2026 and the first auction (Y-4) for the delivery year 2028-2029.

Elia announced that the target for the 2025-2026 delivery year has been achieved: “security of supply is guaranteed and sufficient volume has been contracted”. A total of 100 MW BESS was contracted in this tender. An important first step has been taken for the delivery year 2028-2029 with the selection of 350 MW of batteries in the Y-4 auction.
