Researchers from four Australian universities have released a new paper asking why solar energy microgrids are not the norm in remote central Australia, while energy insecurity is prevalent in remote Aboriginal households.

Together with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Desert Knowledge Research Institute, the Alice Springs researchers collaborated on local perceptions of solar energy and health.

The article, published in the Magazine for cleaner productionconcluded that there is limited research on the links between diesel-fired energy generation and health in remote Australia and that there is a need to evaluate and communicate the benefits of transitioning to solar energy in those locations.

A key highlight of the article is that community members who are knowledgeable about the benefits of clean energy are critical to the clean energy transition.
