The Greek Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has increased its target for a roll -out of a Merchant Standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to 3.55 GW against the background of the rising demand for flexible electricity and strong investment interest on the market.

The draft plan that will be presented on 21 February increases the target of the initially planned 1.5 GW and exceeds all the implementation scenarios considered in the past. The government is now aiming for 2.65 GW of battery projects on the Transmissieret and another 900 MW on the distribution network.

According to the Greek National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), the nation wants to install 4.3 GW storage in 2030. So far, 900 MW has been assigned via The Greek regulating authority for energy, waste and water (Raaey) offers. That is why the remaining share would be delivered under the new plan, but without any subsidy support.
