Nederlands Power Utility Eneco has commissioned an industrial heat pump in a municipal waste water treatment plant in Utrecht.

The company said that the project is the largest heat pump system in the Netherlands. Project partners were the German machine provider Innomotics and Johnson Controls based in the US.

“The system uses remaining heat of 65 million liters treated waste water daily, and generates 25 MW to 27 MW of heat,” the three companies said in a joint statement. “This translates into 15% of the district heating question in Utrecht and Nieugein or a total of around 20,000 households.”

The system is based on four heat exchangers, each equipped with two compressors powered by a 1-MW engine from Innomotics. It also uses ammonia as a coolant.

The heat pump is said to extract the remaining heat of 65 million liters treated waste water daily and restores another 1 MW of the engines and discs.

“Eneco led the development of the facility, Johnson Controls led to the advanced heat pump systems, and Innomotics delivered the advanced motorcycle and drive technologies that guarantee his exceptional performance,” said the companies, without providing further technical details. “Combined, the companies have created a replicable model for modern urban renewable energy systems.”
