GhanaThe Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is an investment of renewable energy and Green Transition Fund.

According to reports from the State news agency, the fund will support investments in renewable energy and local use of green technologies, while the burden of electricity rates for institutions in state ownership is reduced.

Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said during the dialogue of sustainable energy policy in Accra that a bill to set up an agency for renewable energy that would supervise the fund, undergoing technical assessment and “very soon” will be submitted to the government.

Jinapor said that the government intends to invest income from fossil fuels in renewable energy, including residential solar installations and street lamps on solar energy.

“We will aggressively promote the use of electric charging vehicles, solar energy for irrigation facilities, offer solar systems for hospitals, public schools, including universities and small and medium-sized companies, and supporting energy-efficiency education,” he added.

Ghana wants to implement competitive purchasing exercises for renewable energy projects to reduce power costs. Jinapor explained. “We are already working together with the World Bank and we are convinced that through competing purchasing of renewable energy and other energy sources we can achieve a much more lower costs of power generation,” the minister said.

Figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) show that Ghana started 169 MW Solar by the end of 2023.
