Gilkes Energy has assured the planning permission for a 1.8 GW/40 GWH Pomped Hydro Energy Storage project, the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom so far.

The Earba Pumped Storage Hydro Project is located in Loch Earba in the Scottish Highlands, about 200 km north of Glasgow on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park.

The proposed development would work by transferring water between Loch Earba and an upper reservoir, Loch Leamhain. If the upper reservoir of the project is full, it would have sufficient storage capacity to generate 22 hours of electricity on its full 1.8 GW power classification, according to planning documents for the project.
