China Southern Power Grid (CSG) announced on 26 May to the commissioning of the Baochi Energy Storage Station in Wenshan, the province of Yunnan-a national pilot project and the first large-scale Hybrid Lithium-Natrium area-storage facility in China. The factory is also the world’s first to use a grid-forming sodium ion battery system.

With a total investment of more than CNY 460 million ($ 63.8 million) and 34,000 m2 occupied, the Baochi factory is designed for an installed capacity of 200 MW/400mWh. Based on a double daily cargo discharge cycle, it can regulate up to 580 GWH-Geneg annually to provide 270,000 households with electricity, with 98% of its energy from renewable energy sources. The facility supports more than 30 local wind and solar energy plants, which relieves the impact of intermittent supply and the integration of high shares of renewable energy sources in the grid is facilitated.
