Renewable energy sources play a leading role in global energy production because of their affordability, sustainability and availability. However, many clean technologies require critical minerals, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and rare earth elements. This is a challenge to scale up production and effort, especially in countries such as the United States, where these materials are not found naturally or where refining options are not available. In addition, historically loaded relationships with some countries that produce these materials can further complicate the situation.

There is a clear gap in the market for innovations in the interior produced renewable energy, in particular within the storage of battery energy. The global energy storage market is increasing year after year, a clear indicator that the acceptance of clean, reliable energy cannot be stopped. There is a possibility for the United States to use its place within the fast-growing energy storage and development industry by exploring alternative technologies that do not require critical minerals or materials and instead make use of abundant, domestic available resources.
