US-Founded Dunne Film Solar module Manufacturer First Solar has announced that it has concluded a food agreement with Ubiqd, a developer of Quantum Dot Nanotechnology. The cooperation is expected to make early acceptance of quantum spots possible in first solar modules, which increases the output efficiency.

Quantum spots (QD) are photoluminescent particles So small that 100,000 of them would cost to span one fingernail, Ubiqd said. The dots are a semiconductor material that is effective in manipulating color and light.

The integration of quantum spots into solar panels supports light absorption, improves the spectral response and promotes performance in the field of solar project on utility scale.

To promote the functionality of its solar PV products, UBIQD recently has established Blueedot Photonics, a company that is allegedly developing the potential in the US. Ensure a relative current reinforcement of 16% When integrated in crystalline silicon solar modules.

The technology is particularly favorable for bifacial solar panels, or panels that produce electricity on both sides, including the back, which collects the light that is reflected from the ground. The company said that quantum spots more than double the bifacial quantum efficiency of light conversion for specific wavelengths and colors are double.

“In the event of an utility scale, even incremental profit in bifaciality translates into a significant impact on the real world on the energy yield,” said Markus Gloeckler, Chief Technology Officer, First Solar.

Ubiqd said the quantum tips can be integrated with “minimal changes in production processes.”

In April the company concluded a series-B financing round of $ 20 million, and announced plans to set up a production facility in New Mexico in the coming year.

The company went one for the first time Joint development agreement With First Solar in 2023. Ubiqd said that the new food agreement has the potential to reach more than 100 tons of production per year.

“This partnership shows how American innovation and production can deliver differentiated performance, especially at a time in which breakthroughs in efficiency and materials is of vital importance than ever,” said Hunter McDaniel, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ubiqd.

The own Quantum DOT technology was originally developed at research institutions based in the US, Los Alamos National Laboratory and MIT

UbiQD was installed in 2021 Energy-producing windows On three commercial sites. In 2022, the Quantum Dot -Zonnet technology of the company was used in a Research project for small companies Innovation With the Air Force of the United States. The Air Force contract gave financing for two installations of more than 20 windows and extra scale and development funds for the product. Also in 2022, Ubiqd announced that it developed a solution for agriculture of controlled environment in Partnership with HelieneA US -based manufacturer of solar module.
