A Chinese-Japanes research team has developed a new laser technology for the micro-turning of transparent and hard materials for solar cell packaging. The process is based on a silver ion solution that is said to be able to achieve high -quality connections.

Researchers from the Heei University of Science and Technology in China and Riken Center for Advanced Photonics in Japan showed a new Silver Ion Solution Support Femtosecond Laser process for welding process from glass to glass with the aim of ultimately applying it to solar cell packaging.

The team demonstrated the strength of the connected glass package with solar cell chips between welded glass samples that continued to work under water.

In their paper, “Femtosecond Laser photochemical reduction of silver ion solution for micro-turning of transparent and hard materials for solar cell packaging“Published in Materials and designDescribe the scientists why a solution for high-quality connections of solar packing materials is needed, and how the new silver ion solution produced an intermediate layer, making femtosecond laser micro-ldening of glass and heterogeneous materials possible.

The results showed that the photochemic silver nanoclusters used in the solution increased the shear strength of glass to 27.36 MPa at a low input energy density (2.4 years/cm2). The silver ion solution improved the efficiency of energy consumption, suppressed the formation of welding cracks and increased the suitability of laser welding by liquid laser welding, according to the research team.

Monocrystalline Silicon and Sapphire were also welded as representative for semiconductor and optical materials with different thermophysical properties. “Despite the mismatches of the material possession, a successful hetero junction was achieved by FS welding welding,” said the research group.

The experimental samples were as follows: commercial silica glass of 20 x 20 x 1 mm3, sapphire glass with a size of 20 x 20 x 1 mm3 and silicon with one crystal 10 x 10 x 0.33 mm3. The laser was a Pharos PH2-20 W system.

The team then tested the seal with a silicon cell chip with solar salares. The encapsulated photovoltaic device was made with a quartz glass substrate a guiding tape contacts. It was placed in water.
