Australian Renewable Energy Company Potentia Energy’s Aud 400 million ($ 260 million) Emeroo Bess in South Australia is the first battery project that receives environmental approval under the New Hydrogen and Renewable Energy (HRE) ACT of the state.

Potentia Energy Chief Executive Officer Werther Esposito said that securing approval under the HRE Act is an important performance for both Potentia Energy and the State.

“It emphasizes our shared dedication to promote the energy transition and strengthens the leadership of South Australia in integrating renewable energy into the net,” said Esposito.

The Emeroo Bess will be collaborated with the 275 MW/570 MWH Bungala Solar Farm. Located 15 km northeast of Port Augusta, the Emeroo Bess will be located next to the operational 570 MW Bungala Solar Farm of Potentia Energy, which includes 840,000 solar modules and powers annually.

Project development for Emeroo Bess will continue with the steps of the final approval under the HRE Act and a final investment decision. The construction is planned to start in 2026, with full operation expected in 2028.

HRE Act

The HRE Act came into force in July 2024. It offers an extensive, transparent control framework for renewable energy, including Bess projects of more than 5 MW, and streamlines the approval process for such projects. The law aims to offer the certainty and reduce bureaucracy.

SA Energy and Mining Minister Tom Koutsantonis said that the investment of Potentia Energy in battery storage at Emeroo was possibly made by the HRE Act.

“I congratulate the company with the first to use this leading renewable energy frame and to become a member of South Australia in its strong progress in the direction of 100% net renewable energy generation,” said Koutsantonis.
