The implementation of solar and energy storage is booming in Chile, stimulated by the supporting government policy that has been considerably stable for 15 years. The nation indeed leads Latin -America in this sector today, together with Brazil.

To put this in context, non -conventional renewable energy (NCRE), as it is called in Chile, accounts for a maximum of 17.3 GW installed capacity in the Andes country, which represents 48% of the total system and 40% of Chili’s electricity generation. Only on solar energy is 10.9 GW of operational installed capacity, with an additional 3.2 GW under construction, according to the report of the National Energy Commission in June 2025 on the NCRE sector.

Felipe Gallardo, director of studies at the Chilean Association of Renewable Energy and Storage (ACERA), said that various factors have caused the growth of photovoltaic. One is the abundant sun sources in the country. Gallardo also points to “the decrease in development costs experienced by renewable technologies, the favorable conditions for financing projects via long-term PPAs and the activation of a pension plan from the coal-fired power station that is currently underway.”
