Perovskite Triple-Junction solar cells are getting closer to ultra-high efficiency

A team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has published a broad assessment of Perovskite/Perovskite/Silicon Triple-Junction Solar cells (PSTJSCs), which emphasizes their rapid progress and outlines future research priorities. The study, which appears in Nano-Micro letters, was led by Leiping Duan, Cheng Xu and Jianghui Zheng.

As silicon solar cells approach their theoretical ceiling of 29.4 percent efficiency, researchers turn to devices with multi-junction. Special interest based on Perovskiet has attracted special interest because of their adjustable band gaps, cost-effective processing and strong opto-electronic performance.

Triple-Junction designs promise considerable profit. Modeling indicates that optimized structures can achieve efficiency than 49 percent, so that the current perovskiet/silicon tandems exceeded a lot. Since the first proof-of-concept PSTJSC achieved only 14 percent efficiency in 2018, certified devices have now been more than 27 percent from 2024.

Challenges continue to exist, including the current mismatch between subcels, voltage shortages in wide band gap perovskites caused by defects and interfaces, by slightly induced phasegregation for mixed-halide absorbers and overall device stability under long-term stress.

The assessment highlights strategies that are being investigated. These include fine tuning band gaps with halide and cation engineering, the recording of tin-based perovskites and the use of transparent conductive oxides or ultrathin metals for efficient connections. Stability research also becomes intensifying, with additive engineering, improved crystallinity and advanced incoming methods that are under development.

Future progress will depend on the combining of materials design at a molecular level with robust device architectures. The authors emphasize the need for scalable manufacturing techniques that are compatible with structured silicon and encapsulation systems that ensure decades of sustainability. With these progress, PSTJSC’s can produce affordable, sustainable and ultra-efficient solar energy on a commercial scale.
