Ford is repurposing underutilized electric vehicle battery capacity and focusing on “higher return opportunities” in the energy storage sector. The auto giant said Monday it will invest about $2 billion over the next two years to scale up the new business.

Initial production is expected to come online within 18 months, supported by Ford’s manufacturing expertise and licensed battery technology. The company aims to deploy at least 20 GWh of energy storage annually by the end of 2027.

Ford expects the new company – including sales and service – will be able to meet growing demand for battery energy storage from data centers and network support infrastructure. To that end, the company plans to repurpose existing, underutilized U.S. battery manufacturing capacity in Glendale, Kentucky.
