Michigan is bringing a 250 MW solar project online in Muskegon

A 250 MW solar project is now online in Michigan, located on 1,900 acres on the Muskegon Resource Recovery Centera wastewater treatment plant, a landfill and an additional environmental location.

Muskegon Solar is the largest solar project for Consumer Energy.

“Consumers Energy is building the electric grid of the future to serve Michigan homes and businesses. Muskegon Solar is an example of the reliable, cost-effective projects we create to ensure we continue to meet our customers’ needs,” said Sri Maddipati, president of Consumers Energy’s electric utility.

Burns & McDonnell acted as EPC for the project. The 250 MW project includes First Solar Series 7 modules, Array Technology trackers, Siemens Gamesa inverters and Shoals Technologies Group and CAB Solar Cable Management tools.

“This project is a testament to the skill and dedication of the local men and women building it, and we are proud to partner with Consumers Energy on such a groundbreaking project for the region,” said Chad Cotter, vice president of the construction group at Burns & McDonnell.

The project includes approximately 0.75 miles of new high-voltage transmission line connecting the facility to existing grid infrastructure. A dedicated 34.5/138 kV open-air collector substation had a single main current transformer (MPT), which stepped generation to a 138 kV dead tank circuit breaker and then to a single starting structure for interconnection. The Burns & McDonnell team also designed a 20-by-40-foot control enclosure to house all relay, protection and control systems. A new 138 kV single-circuit transmission line, approximately half a mile in length, was designed to connect the collector substation to the remote switching station.
