Terra-GenJointly owned by Masdar and Igneo Infrastructure Partners, has achieved commercial operations at the Lockhart CL I and II battery energy storage project in San Bernardino County, California. Built and co-located with the Lockhart solar and battery resources already in operation, the Lockhart CL I ESS project provides 69 MW of capacity (276 MWh), and the Lockhart CL II ESS will add another 59.7 MW of capacity (238.8 MWh).

The existing Lockhart solar project is already in operation.

“California’s clean energy goals are among the most ambitious in the country, and I am confident in the positive impact our new Lockhart facility will have in powering the state’s future with new, clean and reliable energy sources,” said John O’Connor, CEO of Terra-Gen.

The combined 128.7 MW, four-hour lithium-ion battery energy storage system project includes 164 battery enclosures and utilizes the existing gen-tie line connecting to the Kramer Junction Substation in Southern California. The use of the resource adequacy capacity is fully contracted under two long-term resource adequacy agreements with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).

“We designed this expansion to connect seamlessly with the existing facility and maximize shared infrastructure,” said Gus Luna, Terra-Gen Chief Development Officer. “The Lockhart complex is a testament to our team’s ability to deliver integrated projects at scale, on time and to the highest performance and safety standards.”

Construction of the new facility created more than 115 jobs during peak activity, and employees collectively worked more than 85,000 hours during construction and transition to operations.
