Plus power has brought online the two-hour 175 MW Cross Town Energy Storage facility in Gorham, Maine. This project is the largest of its kind on the ISO New England network.

“Today, Maine welcomed the largest energy storage project of its kind in New England, delivering real cost savings and reliable power to Maine,” said Governor Janet Mills. “This project will help lower electricity costs by reducing the need for expensive fossil fuels when the electric grid is stressed, as we saw during recent extremely cold weather. I congratulate the City of Gorham and Plus Power on this important achievement that will deliver lasting savings and reliability for Maine residents.”

Cross Town will support the state’s goal of deploying 400 MW of battery energy storage by 2030. Located on approximately five acres of land, Cross Town is adjacent to Central Maine Power’s 115 kV Moshers substation, where the transmission grid is particularly congested. The facility’s location will help reduce congestion and facilitate the use of northern Maine wind energy to meet demand in southern Maine and Boston.

Cross Town will also help ISO New England offset the energy capacity lost due to the retirement of gas and other power plants.

“Plus Power is proud to once again operate a historic facility in New England and further strengthen the region’s power reliability,” said Naveen Abraham, CEO of Plus Power. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with ISO New England as our facilities demonstrate the unique capabilities of battery energy storage systems.”

Cross Town has 156 units of Sungrow’s PowerTitan battery energy storage system. Plus Power worked with the main office in Maine Cianbro Corp. on engineering, purchasing and construction of the facility.
