A 300MW/1,200MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, has been put into commercial operation after completing performance validation testing. The project uses a combination of lithium iron phosphate and vanadium flow batteries, with the aim of combining fast response batteries with longer duration storage in a hybrid configuration.

It uses grid-forming energy conversion systems supplied by Sineng Electric, each with a capacity of 1.25 MW. The system can provide power support, virtual inertia and damping support during mains outages, and black start functions during power outages. Millisecond-level Sineng power support, virtual inertia and damping support, suppressing high-frequency oscillations under both large and small mains disturbances

The Kubuqi Desert facility is part of a 3GW/12.8GWh energy storage project in the Inner Mongolia region, known as Gushanliang Energy Storage Plant. Performance validation testing was said to take place via a three-charge/three-discharge process.
