Independent energy producer (IPP) ContourGlobal has acquired a 500MW/2,000MWh battery energy storage project in Ayr, south-west Scotland.
This project, acquired from, among others, British developer New Energy Partnership, marks the IPP’s first foray into the British market with one of the largest BESS projects under development in the country.
The Wallace project has already obtained a building permit, a land option and been assigned Gate 2 status under the Reform process of the British grid connection.
According to the IPP, Scotland represents one of Europe’s most active regions for the development of hyperscale data centers.
The Wallace project will also be the company’s largest BESS project in its portfolio following the recent project commissioning of a solar plus storage facility in Chile with a BESS of 200 MW/1,300 MWh, as covered by our sister site Energy storage.news. In the coming months, ContourGlobal will begin construction of another solar-plus-storage project in Arizona, USA, with a BESS of 360 MW/1,400 MWh.
Scotland’s BESS project will support the balancing of the electricity grid and the integration of the region’s significant surplus of wind energy, while reducing the curtailment of renewable energy sources.
In addition, the Wallace BESS project is expected to participate in the upcoming UK Capacity Market auction. The recent results of the T-1 Capacity Market auction 576 MW allocated to BESS projectsaccounting for 8.02% of the total allocated capacity for delivery year 2026/2027.
ContourGlobal will combine contracted agreements with vendor exposure for the Wallace project, due to strong interest in tolling and route-to-market arrangements. The IPP added that the project is also well positioned to generate value through the UK Balancing Mechanism, where Scottish BESS projects can benefit from strong dispatch activities.
