Turkey’s YEO is partnering with Zambian renewable energy company GEI Power to develop a 60 MW/20 MWh solar power plant with battery storage in Choma district, southern Zambia.

The facility is touted as Zambia’s first solar power plant with battery storage. Valued at approximately $65 million, it is expected to be commercially operational by September 2025 and provide electricity to at least 65,000 homes. GEI Power Managing Director Ignatius Anayawa said feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments and grid impact studies have been carried out.

Francesca Chisangano Zyambo, Permanent Secretary of the Zambian Ministry of Energy has urged the two sides to take swift action to commission the project as the facility will be important in alleviating power shortages in the country.

“We also want to leverage Turkey’s engineering and battery storage innovation expertise and set up an assembly plant in the country,” she said.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Zambia’s installed solar capacity stood at 124 MW at the end of 2023.

In April, Canadian developer SkyPower Global signed a 1 GW power purchase agreement with state-owned Zambia Electricity Supply Corp.
