Halocell energyan Australian leader in perovskite solar cell development, will commercialize its flexible 7cm perovskite solar cell strips. They can generate enough power to replace disposable batteries, making them ideal for indoor use.

The technology has potential in the field of digital price labeling, which has been widely adopted in retail, where perovskites particularly excel for their ability to be chemically tuned to function in various indoor lighting environments.

Halocell Energy CEO Paul Moonie said pv magazine the perovskite solar cell strips can be optimized for different types of lighting including warm or cool LEDs, fluorescent lighting, sunlight, cloudy climates or even space, showing the versatility of perovskites.

“So if you go into a Woolworths fresh produce department you will notice that the electronic shelf labels are no longer paper and these locations have standardized lighting,” Moonie said. “In Australia that’s hundreds of thousands of units so we can tailor our chemistry in production to one product line, and the chemistry is a simple ink replacement in production, so it doesn’t mean retooling the entire production line, it’s just replacing the ink.”
