The solar strike price will increase by 30% from £47 per megawatt hour (MWh) to £61/MWh. Image: Matt Austin. The government announced on July 30 that the budget for the sixth auction round (AR6) of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) program will see an increase of £500 million, to £1.5 billion. It is the largest ever budget for the scheme and includes £1.1 billion for offshore wind energy, allocating more budget to it than all previous auction rounds combined. Ed Miliband, the Energy Minister, called the previous auction round (AR5) a “catastrophe” because no offshore wind was awarded a contract.…
The project will be connected to the electrical grid via the existing substation in Chickerell (photo). Image: Statera / National Grid. Statera has received planning permission for a 400MW/2,400MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Weymouth. The project, at East Chickerell Court Farm, had caused local controversy due to the size and fire risk of lithium-ion batteries, but neither the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service nor the national Environment Agency objected. The vote was six to two in favor at a Council meeting in Dorset. Supporters of the project said its contribution to the UK’s decarbonisation efforts,…
A large-scale battery delivery overturned on a highway after the truck carrying the batteries collided with a car, overcorrected, tipped sideways and dumped the load, leading to a fire that lasted more than 24 hours. August 1, 2024 John Fitzgerald WeaverBy pv magazine USAA truck full of batteries caught fire after an accident on a California highway on Friday, July 26, just before 6 a.m. PST, leading to significant delays as the lithium product burned through the weekend.According to the California Highway Patrol:The collision occurred when the driver of a 2020 Freightliner, which was loading a flatbed truck with a…
Figures from Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation show that at least 667 net metering consumers have benefited from the country’s solar rebate program since its launch in April. The majority have received the maximum available MYR4,000 ($875.61). August 1, 2024 Patrick Jowett Image: Kylle Pangan/UnsplashMalaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) says more than 667 net-metered consumers have installed solar power systems and received rebates from the country’s Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS), which opened in April. Petra says the majority of beneficiaries have so far received the maximum MYR4,000 ($875.61) available under the…
Norwegian vertical PV system supplier Over Easy Solar has installed a 248.4 kW installation in the Norwegian national football stadium. The system has more than 1,200 vertical photovoltaic panels, developed by Over Easy Solar itself. August 1, 2024 Patrick Jowett The world’s largest vertical two-sided rooftop solar installation to date has been installed at the Norwegian National Football Stadium. The 284.4 kW system consists of 1,242 vertical photovoltaic units of 200 Wp each, supplied by Over Easy Solar, a Norway-based specialist in vertical solar energy systems. Over Easy Solar’s vertical XM-2 Quattro-200S panels feature silicon heterojunction cells and a module architecture…
Aspen Power announced it has completed six solar projects totaling 25.5 MWDC of generation capacity in Pennsylvania. These projects represent the first half of a portfolio that Aspen Power acquired from Sunrise Energy, from which the projects emerged. Aspen Power co-developed the projects in collaboration with Sunrise Energy. Aspen Power’s entire portfolio of completed or contracted solar projects in Pennsylvania totals more than 145 MW. Pennsylvania has set a goal of getting 18% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. These commercial net metering solar projects will help achieve that goal while enabling residents, businesses and other organizations to…
Australia has cemented itself as the world’s fourth largest market for large-scale batteries, with new data from research consultancy Rystad Energy showing that almost 3GW/8GWh of battery energy storage projects have started construction in the first seven months of 2024. August 1, 2024 David CarollBy pv magazine AustraliaRystad Energy said developers have started building more than 2.8 GW of new battery energy storage capacity in Australia since the start of the year, laying the foundation for what will be another record year of new battery installations at large dish.Construction of a record 4GW/10GWh of grid-scale battery energy storage projects began…
Japanese scientists built a thin-film perovskite solar cell in which fluorinated phosphoric acid (TPFP) was incorporated into the absorber precursor solution. The device achieved remarkable energy conversion efficiency due to effective passivation at the interface between the perovskite film and the hole transport layer. August 1, 2024 Emiliano BelliniResearchers from Saitama University in Japan have fabricated a thin-film perovskite solar cell based on fluorinated phosphoric acid passivating additives and mixed solvents for passivating halide defects.“Rather than relying on traditional surface treatments, the method directly integrates fluorinated phosphoric acid (TPFP) into the perovskite precursor solution,” the research team explains. “TPFP’s inherent…
Libra Energy has unveiled its first major Australian renewable energy project, announcing plans to build an 850MW/3,400MWh battery energy storage system in south-east Queensland to capture excess solar energy and increase energy supply and demand. stabilize the electricity grid during peak hours. July 31, 2024 David CarollBy pv magazine AustraliaQueensland-based Libra Energy has announced that development applications for the Bremer Battery Project – an 850MW, four-hour battery energy storage system being developed near Ipswich in the state’s south-east – have been submitted to planning authorities for approval. The Bremer project originally included plans for a 150 MW solar farm, but Libra…
