Cyprus record noise did not come as a surprise. A year ago, the local operator of the transmission grid predicted that the country should limit 28% of it Domestic renewable energy generation In 2024 due to the low seasonal demand and the need to keep the network stable.

CyprusGrid, an energy analysis platform focused on Cyprus’s electricity sector, reported that 29% of the renewable electricity of the country was restricted last year.

Andreas Procopiou, founder of CyprusGrid, said PV -Magazine That the calculations are based on publicly available data from local network operators.

In 2022, Cyprus limited 3.3% of the renewable energy. That figure rose to 13.4% in 2023 before reaching a record 29% last year, equal to the annual electricity consumption of around 28,000 households, ProCopiou said.

Cyprus was installed in 2024 159 MW New PV capacityMainly through net measurement and net billing systems. The country now has 1,478 MW of fossil fuels, 797 MW Zonne -PV, 155 MW wind energy and 12.4 MW Biomass plants.

“Despite the addition of more renewable energy factories to the system, the actual contribution of every installed megawatt to the electricity story of the island has fallen over the years,” Procopiou said. “This is because the electricity system has not developed the necessary flexibility to meet the growing share of variable renewable energy generation. To keep the grid stable at all times, operators still have to run fossil fuels, leading to the limitation of green electricity. These limitations become more frequent during periods of lower demand, such as in the fall and spring. Unless the country embraces energy storage and modern energy management, Cyprus will continue to waste green energy. “

The Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry recently launched the first in the country Subsidy schedule for large -scale energy storage systems. The program requires that storage is installed in addition to existing renewable energy factories.

PV -Magazine has reported on the new subsidy scheme, but there are still questions about whether it can add storage capacity quickly to prevent the island from wasting cheap, emission -free renewable energy.
