Daikin has introduced two new propane heat pump lines for industrial and district heating applications, combining monobloc units from 20 kW to 85 kW with modular systems scalable up to 2 MW.

Japanese heating systems manufacturer Daikin has launched two new propane (R-290) heat pump product lines for industrial building and district heating applications.

“The new R-290 range has been fully designed and tested at the new Daikin Applied Europe Research and Development Center in Italy, which was inaugurated in 2025,” the company said in a statement. “The new platform integrates EWA/YK-CZ monobloc units from 20 to 85 kW and EWYK-QZ modular heat pumps, configurable in multi-array systems up to 2000 kW, providing a coherent and scalable solution for HVAC applications.”

The EWA/YK-CZ is a reversible air-to-water heat pump built around inverter-driven scroll compressor technology, enhanced with vapor injection – a configuration that, the manufacturer says, maximizes heat output while maintaining efficiency even under part-load conditions.

With a rated capacity range of 20 kW to 85 kW and the ability to supply water temperatures up to 75 C, the unit is designed to step into the traditional boiler role in existing plant rooms and provide heat compatible with older radiator systems or industrial processes. The compact monoblock format aims to simplify logistics and installation, from renovation scenarios in city centers to integration into new commercial buildings, while optional configurations, such as integrated pumps and multiple refrigerant circuits, increase its applicability.

The product also includes integrated safety features and inverter control that dynamically adapts to load demand, minimizing alternating losses and improving part-load efficiency. According to the company, these properties can contribute to a longer lifespan.

The EWYK-QZ is described as a modular reversible air-to-water heat pump, built around a 135 kW basic module. The system can be configured with up to four modules per array, delivering up to 500 kW per array, while grouped configurations allow capacities up to 2 MW. This multi-layer scalability reflects the growing market demand for flexible, high-capacity heating systems, the manufacturer said.

The unit combines inverter-controlled scroll compressors with electronically commutated (EC) brushless fans to ensure precise modulation over a wide operating range. Full inverter technology enables high seasonal efficiency and stable performance at part load, which is a crucial factor in real installations, where systems rarely operate at full power. By continuously adapting to demand, the EWYK-QZ aims to reduce cycle losses while maintaining consistent thermal delivery, Daikin said.

The system can deliver heating water temperatures up to 75°C, making it suitable for boiler replacement scenarios or high temperature process applications. On the cooling side it can deliver water temperatures down to –15 C.

The product features a plug-and-play modular concept, where modules are combined into arrays and managed in grouped configurations. This approach allows for phased implementation and future expansion without redesigning the entire system. The system’s reduced water content is designed to improve responsiveness and ensure stable heating performance over the long term, while the optimized defrost logic for multi-unit installations helps maintain efficiency during cold weather operation, Daikin said.

The EWYK-QZ also includes dedicated exhaust fans for the unit and control cabinet, refrigerant leak detectors in the compressor and control cabinet compartments, and visual and audible alarms. Safety components are supported by a dedicated electrical supply, ensuring operational integrity under all conditions.
