Fronius is cutting 350 jobs

Fronius has unveiled plans to cut 350 jobs due to “continued weak sales” of its solar division. The Austrian inverter manufacturer significantly expanded production and hired new employees in 2022 and 2023.

According to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), Fronius plans to cut 350 jobs.

The company will reportedly reduce its workforce, especially at its production site in Sattledt. It blamed the “current solar crisis” for its decision.

By the end of 2023, Fronius had already reduced working hours and temporary workers. The company said at the time that it was “well prepared” for the year ahead.

According to the APA report, the company internally introduced short-time work for 1,000 employees in PV production, but the situation deteriorated in the first two quarters of 2024.

However, wholesalers are reducing inventories more slowly than expected. In Austria, new PV system installations have already fallen by 30% to 40% from 2023 due to falling energy costs and financing uncertainty. In Germany, the market for solar panels on roofs has halved, the company said. A direct question from pv magazine against Fronius remained unanswered.

According to the agency’s report, Fronius also cited “dumping prices from manufacturers in China, which have flooded the European market with products that are sometimes below production costs” as a reason for the current problems. European politicians have yet to respond decisively to the issue.
