The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) says that Georgia has a great potential for solar energy, with most prime sites for deployment concentrated in the east of the country, based on a recent destination assessment.
A considerable part of GeorgiaThe land surface is well suited for the implementation of solar energy, with a maximum development potential of up to 87 GW, according to a new report from Irena.
The “Investment options for solar and wind bowls on utilities: Assessment Georgia ZoningThe report uses destination assessment method to identify favorable areas in Georgia for future implementation of renewable energy sources.
The government of Georgia asked for the assessment, with the support of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and Georgian State Electrosystem, to help inform national infrastructure planning.
Most potential locations that have been identified for renewable energy sources are located in the central, southern, southwestern and southeast parts of Georgia and are located next to transmission and road networks. The eastern part of the country turned out to be particularly favorable for solar energy.
The report identifies and maps these zones, whereby the techno-economic characteristics of each area are detailed, including installed capacities, potential hourly and annual energy generation, localized costs of electricity (LCOE) and distances of existing transmissive line networks.

The estimate of 87 GW is good for a footprint of the land use of 50 MW/km², a maximum solar concentration of 5 GW per zone and a land use factor between 20% and 30%.
Irena said the findings are intended to call in -depth investigation that specific sites set up for more detailed evaluation using high temporary and spatial resolution resolution data.
It acknowledged that there are various restrictions on the project, whereby the investigation is not processed in permit connection requirements, land ownership or protected land status, so the maximum implementation figure must be treated carefully.
However, Irena said that the findings suggest that Georgia could increase its objectives for renewable energy consumption. The country currently wants to reach 5,289 GW of renewable energy sources by 2030, according to the 2024 Global Energy Monitor.
Towards the end of 2024 133 MW -Zonne -Zonne -Energy, Georgia had deployed, according to the statistics of Irena, an increase of 64 MW at the end of 2023.
