General Motors has announced that it will offer this GM energy home energy management systems and home PowerBank batteries in leasing programs. Homeowners can lease GM Energy products, similar to leasing a vehicle.
“We built GM Energy to unlock new benefits unique to electric vehicles. How incredible is it that a GM EV can power your well-equipped home, help manage your energy costs and work with the grid in the future?” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “With leasing, we’re breaking down a barrier and trying to make this technology available to every homeowner, not just GM EV owners. This is about giving people a smarter way to manage their energy and get more value from every dollar they spend.”
Some GM EV owners have left their household lights on during hurricanes on the Gulf Coast or wildfires on the West Coast. Others reduce their electricity bills by charging at night and using stored energy during peak hours. In Texas, GM’s “Free Charge Nights” program with Reliant Energy makes that even easier. Other utilities are participating in programs like PG&E’s vehicle-to-everything (V2X) pilot, which allows EVs to send power back to the home, the grid or other appliances, offering up to $4,500 in incentives for qualifying applicants for qualifying GM Energy products.
GM Energy has undergone positive internal testing for vehicle-to-grid capability and is now working to certify it with local utilities, bringing us closer to a future where cars, homes and the grid actually work together.
More details about GM Energy’s leasing program will be shared closer to launch.
