Developer Intelligent Land Investments (ILI) Group has section 36 Planning State for a 100 MW/350MWH 3.5-hour duration of the battery storage system (BES) (BES) in Scotland.

The Learielaw Bess project will be located in the vicinity of the city of Broxburn, West Lothian, known for its history as a center of the Oliebrise industry, thanks to the investor and industrialist James Young.

This marks the first of the ILI Group projects that will receive planning permission in 2025. At the end of 2024, the organization announced a flurry of successful planning approvals, especially for its 100 MW Flemyland and 200 MW Whitehill Bess sites in Scotland.

Mark Wilson, CEO of ILI Group, said that the project will be another strong addition to his bess -pipeline.

“As the grid evolves to treat more renewable energy, projects such as Learielaw will be vital in offering the flexibility and reliability that the system needs. This is an important step in our mission to make Scotland a leader in clean, safe energy,” Wilson added.

ILI Group, located in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, currently has a 4.7 GW development sports folio, which includes 2.5 GW of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) projects and 2.2 GW BESS projects on the scale scale tool.

One of these Phes sites is the 1.5 GW/45GWH Balliememanch development. In July 2024, ILI Group submitted its 36 -planning application section to the Scottish government.

The Learielaw Bess has a grid connection date of 2028, in which ILI Group explains that this will make it good to support the energy transition of Scotland by adding fire capacities to the absorption of variable renewable energy generation.

Scotland is a strong area for Bess development due to the high levels of wind generation. However, due to an insufficient transmission network, this energy cannot be exported to England.

A way to soften this is to offer large-scale bess, which stores surplus electricity that is generated by wind energy plants and is unclear when needed.
